Sunday, March 27, 2014, New York, NY – Gotham Performing Arts presents the Empire City Men's Chorus (ECMC) May 2014 concert A MORE PERFECT UNION with Artistic Director, Matthew D. Oltman with Alden Gatt as Principal Accompanist on piano.
Building on our artistic vision of fostering social and community dialogue, the Empire City Men's Chorus is excited to present its May 2014 concert A MORE PERFECT UNION celebrating the quest for freedom, peace and equality. Join us for a night of timeless political and social writings, speeches, and addresses woven into compelling music arrangements for men's ensemble. Many of the featured texts come from historical luminaries like Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Susan B. Anthony. You will also hear Melissa Dunphy's award winning What do you think I fought for at Omaha Beach, a setting of Philip Spooner's compelling speech on marriage equality given in 2009. Finally, we will premiere a recent ECMC commission One Song composed by the talented John Conahan with text by 13th-century Persian mystic and philosopher Rumi. These works represent centuries of struggle for social equality, a struggle that continues to mold and shape a unique and great American nation. But with all that greatness, there is still work to be done.
Matthew Oltman, ECMC's Artistic Director, serves on the staff of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) in Program Development. He continues to lead choral clinics and master classes with choirs from around the globe. He is Music Director Emeritus of the Grammy award winning male vocal ensemble, Chanticleer.
The Empire City Men’s Chorus, now in its twenty-first year, is renowned for its eclectic multilingual repertoire of predominantly classical music. ECMC consistently present concerts which boast a variety of well-known composers as well as newly commissioned works by exciting young composers. As a gay and gay friendly organization, ECMC believes that choral music can be a compelling artistic response to pressing issues within our communities.
