Building My House by Marisa Michelson and Joshua H. Cohen

At last week's rehearsal, we had the honor and privilege of working with Marisa Michelson, the Jonathan Larson Award-winning composer, singer and voice teacher. Marisa led us through a series of exercises to free the body and the voice, and then worked with us on the song, Building My House, from her musical Tamar of the River, (Music & book by Marisa Michelson, Book & lyrics by Joshua H. Cohen), which she has arranged for male voices.  We are thrilled to be singing an excerpt from this new work.

Here is a brief synopsis of Tamar of the River:  The story is is inspired by the Biblical story of Tamar and Judah. In a war-torn world, where East and West are divided by a River red with blood, one young woman is called to raise her voice. As Tamar sets out single-mindedly in pursuit of peace, she journeys to a foreign land, finding a new family and unexpected love. Each decision that brings her closer to her goal also becomes a choice she struggles to accept. Tamar and Judah grapple with powerful questions that resonate deeply in today’s world.

Last year, the world premiere recording of Tamar of the River was released.  It is available on iTunes and at Below is a video exploring the new musical, Tamar of the River, from the 2013 Prospect Theater Company production of the musical, which was directed by Daniel Goldstein.
