Conrad Susa, a pivotal American composer, fell into the shadows of many other great composers of his time. Yet, like so many important composers before him, he managed to not only create a substantial output of concert music, but also to coin an unmistakable style of music and influence countless singers, librettists, composers, and listeners alike. This spring, under the music direction of Conrad Susa’s faithful student and close friend Vince Peterson, ECMC will breathe new life into all of Susa’s music for men's chorus and pay homage to this formidable man of deep musical substance.  The Treasured Volume will feature an entire concert dedicated to the works of Conrad Susa including his lesser known works for men’s chorus, including Dirge from Cymbeline and Earth Song.  ECMC will record both performances live for use on the first album ever of Conrad Susa’s men’s choral works.

Vince Peterson, Artistic Director
Sean Forte, Assistant Director and Accompanist

The men of ECMC will present "Merry Gentlemen," a selection of traditional holiday songs and carols in full dapper array. Evoking the comfort and familiarity of a time not long ago when handshakes sealed the deal and words were bond; when hearts were light, and life was simple. At the heart of the concert, Artistic Director Vince Peterson will prepare a new men's chorus edition of Antonio Vivaldi's celebrated masterpiece, "Gloria in D Major, RV 589," which will be presented with a small baroque consort. Other men's chorus masterworks, new and old, will include Pietro Yon's timeless "O Holy Night," Luca Marenzio's "Hodie Christus Natus Est," and Irving Berlin's iconic "White Christmas." Perhaps when you hear the bells ring, your wings will grow too? Life is still wonderful when we make it that way!

Vince Peterson, Artistic Director

Joe Barros, Original Choreography for Art in Me and Love Song
Michael John Hughes and Kenneth Michael Murray, Dancers

FREE AND EASY: SONGS OF YOUTH AND PLEASURE was an ECMC concert series that took place on Saturday, May 7 at 8:00 p.m.and Sunday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m., both at Paul Taylor Dance Studios at 551 Grand Street in Manhattan.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

As the old saying goes: “You’re only as old as you feel” and, in this respect, many of us are deeply connected despite even huge generation gaps. There is so much we can learn from each other. Sometimes the older ones are disenchanted by what they see happening in the world today. Sometimes, the young of society are revving their cars in eagerness to embark on life’s journey, but feel that long-held traditions are holding their gears in neutral… But being a “person of the world” is always being “free and easy;” and truly any place we hang our hats is home at any time. This music celebrates the blissful blindness and naiveté of youth and the youthful mindset. It asserts a person’s freedom in the here and now and studies the idea of fraternity and frivolity with joyful curiosity. Centered in the performance were brilliant male chorus works by David Conte, Camille Saint-Saens, Ulf Långbacka, ECMC Composer-in-Residence Kyle Randall, and more!  – Vince Peterson
